The quick answer
Test another included channel before changing your VPN. If only a game fails, check its blackout and market. If another screen interrupts playback, check stream limits. For a location error, compare connections using the steps below.

1. Match the failure to the right check
Keep the account and device unchanged. Try the failing channel, another channel in your plan, and an on-demand title. Note whether playback never starts, stops when another screen opens, or fails only for one event.
| What you see | Check next |
|---|---|
| Location message or 11-XXX error | Location verification and connection |
| One local channel or game is unavailable | Market availability and blackouts |
| Playback stops when another device starts | Orange and Blue stream limits |
| Channels missing, app frozen or player blank | Account, guide and player |
Before resetting devices, check the Sling error lookup and service notices. A reported outage or channel-availability change needs a different response from a problem confined to your connection.
2. Check a location or VPN error
Sling describes 11-XXX errors as difficulty verifying the streaming location. It says some VPN connections are mislocated or blocked and advises disconnecting the VPN. Its service is available within the 50 United States and Puerto Rico. Read the official location-error instructions.
- In a supported location, disconnect the VPN, reopen Sling and retry the same channel.
- If you are comparing VPN performance, reconnect, reopen the player and repeat that exact test.
- Record which connection fails. If available, compare another internet provider without changing the account or programme.
If the ordinary connection works, the changed network path matters; the comparison does not reveal Sling’s detection method. If both fail, continue below. When travelling outside the supported area, an ordinary connection is not a valid working baseline.
For a mobile location error, check Sling’s location permission as directed in its help article. Want to evaluate a residential US connection? Review USip’s Sling TV offer and available plans.
3. Separate local channels from sports blackouts
A US country result does not establish local-channel availability. Sling lists local channels by ZIP code and plan; Sling Orange does not include local channels. Use the official local-channel lookup for the channel and location you actually need.
If a listed local channel is missing, Sling directs users to Settings → Location → Current location in the app. Follow the displayed confirmation steps. Keep the expected station and current location in your notes.
A blackout is a separate restriction affecting a game, event or programme. Sling explains that these can depend on broadcast rights, viewing area or device. A game may be available on another channel carrying a different broadcast; check your available listings. See the blackout explanation.
For a blackout that appears incorrect, Sling recommends checking the IP location from a non-mobile device on the home network. Compare that result with your actual location. Changing an IP does not add a channel to your package or establish that you qualify for a particular broadcast.
4. Count the streams for the channel you selected
If viewing stops when someone starts another screen, check the plan before changing the VPN. Sling’s simultaneous-stream rules distinguish Orange channels from Blue channels, including when both plans are purchased together.
- Sling Orange: one active stream.
- Sling Blue: up to three active streams.
- Orange & Blue: up to four in total, consisting of three Blue streams and one Orange stream. Orange-only channels retain their single-stream restriction.
For example, a second ESPN stream can hit the Orange limit even when the combined subscription has spare Blue capacity. On-demand viewing and eligible TV Everywhere apps also count toward the limit. Stop an existing stream, then retry on your chosen device. A new IP does not increase the plan’s allowance.
5. Check the account and the affected player
Missing channels can start with the wrong viewing session. Sling advises checking that you are signed in, showing all guide categories and using a plan that includes the channel. A signed-out Freestream view does not show your paid channels. If you have several accounts, confirm the subscription email. Follow the missing-channel checklist.
An expired short-term pass or a recent package change can also remove access. A padlock can mean the programme is outside your subscription or requires a parental-control PIN. Resolve that account detail before another connection test.
- Browser: refresh the player; if needed, close the window and open watch.sling.com again.
- Phone or TV app: fully close and relaunch Sling using the instructions for your device.
- Repeated crashes: check the app update, restart and device-comparison steps in Sling’s crash troubleshooting guide.
Use one change per retry. If another device works, investigate the original player and its connection. A working laptop does not prove that your television follows the same VPN route.
6. Compare your public IPv4 before and after connecting
Open What is my IP? on the device you are testing. Select Save as before, connect the VPN and select Check again. Compare the IPv4 and estimated country, then return to the same Sling channel.
An unchanged address is a reason to check whether that browser is included in the VPN route. A changed address confirms a different exit for this lookup. With selective routing, Sling can still follow another path. This tool does not check IPv6 or certify an address as residential.

Quick questions
Why does ESPN work on one screen but stop on another?
Check the Orange stream allowance. Buying Orange & Blue does not turn an Orange-only channel into three simultaneous streams. See Sling’s plan limits.
Will a residential US IP fix a sports blackout?
It changes the connection being evaluated. Broadcast rights, your location, package and device still determine access; test the specific event rather than assuming a US IP resolves it.
Where do I choose a setup for my device?
Open the Sling TV device check. Sling TV is preselected; choose your device to see the relevant USip option and setup links.
