THE ESSENTIALS

What is a residential IP address?

A residential IP is an internet-facing address associated with a home internet connection. Here is what that tells you, how it fits into a connection, and which details need a separate check.

The quick answer

Residential describes a network association, not a promise about privacy or access.

A US location, a fixed address and exclusive use are different properties.

A VPN or proxy is a connection method; the IP at its exit can have different network characteristics.

What residential means

When people discuss a residential IP, they usually mean the public IP associated with an internet service provider’s home broadband connection. A residential proxy service routes a customer’s traffic through residential IPs. This is a description of the address’s network context. Decodo: residential proxy networks.

You may also see labels such as ISP, hosting, mobile or business in an IP lookup. Treat them as classifications to understand. They do not, by themselves, describe everything about a connection or its service plan.

Where the public IP fits

Your laptop can have a private address inside your home network while its internet traffic uses a public address. With network address translation, private traffic can be translated to a publicly routable address. The local address in your Wi-Fi settings may therefore differ from the one a website sees. Cloudflare: how NAT works.

For example, think of the path as your browser, then your internet connection, then the website. Add a forward proxy and there is another intermediary on that path. The website can see requests as coming from the proxy’s IP. Some proxies forward original client information, so this is not a blanket anonymity promise. MDN: proxies and client information.

Residential and datacenter IPs

Residential IPs are associated with consumer internet access; datacenter IPs are associated with hosting and cloud infrastructure. Both are public IP addresses. The useful distinction is the kind of network behind them.

The boundary is not always obvious from the network operator’s name. One operator can offer home internet and hosting within the same network. IP intelligence providers classify addresses using their own data and methods, so an ISP name alone does not prove a particular address is residential. IPinfo: ISP and hosting classification.

For a purchase decision, ask how the service describes its IPs and what evidence it can provide. Avoid choosing purely because a marketing label sounds more reassuring. Our residential vs datacenter IP guide compares the practical differences and the limits of each label.

Keep these four properties separate

An address can have several descriptions at once. Reading each label as an answer to a different question makes product pages easier to compare.

PropertyThe question it answers
CountryWhere is the IP associated geographically?
Network typeIs it associated with residential access, hosting or another kind of network?
Static or dynamicIs the address intended to remain fixed, or can its assignment change?
Shared or dedicatedCan other customers use it, or is its use reserved for one customer or organization?

Dynamic does not mean an IP changes every time you open a page. It can change over time; a static assignment is intended to remain fixed. AT&T: static and dynamic addresses.

A shared service can use a consistent IP, while a dedicated service reserves use for a customer or organization. Exclusivity and continuity should both be confirmed in the service terms. Proton: shared and dedicated IPs.

Where VPNs and proxies come in

Residential describes the exit IP’s network association. VPN and proxy describe ways of routing traffic. Choosing a VPN server in the US does not, on its own, establish that its exit IP is residential.

A VPN uses an encrypted tunnel for the traffic routed through it. A web proxy typically handles configured browser or application traffic. Exact coverage depends on the client and settings, so check which apps and traffic the service supports. Mozilla: VPNs and web proxies.

When comparing products, ask two separate questions: which kind of IP will I use, and how will my traffic reach it? The answers should match both your task and your device.

What the label does not promise

Residential does not mean undetectable. Cloudflare documents detection signals for traffic from residential proxy networks. A network classification should never be read as guaranteed access to a website. Cloudflare: residential proxy detection.

It also does not identify a precise home address. IP location is an estimate, and databases can disagree. MaxMind says its data cannot reliably locate a specific household or street address. MaxMind: location limits.

For a real task, assess the connection as a whole: setup, traffic coverage, consistency, the provider’s terms and the destination’s requirements. A single label cannot answer all of those questions.

Put the definition into practice

Suppose you need to review your own website’s US experience. Start by specifying the country, the browser and the pages you want to inspect. If residential network characteristics matter to that review, add them as an explicit requirement. If you need repeatable sessions, ask about address continuity too.

You now have a useful brief for a provider, rather than a list of interchangeable labels. Our US residential IP selection guide turns that brief into a checklist you can use before choosing a service.

Quick questions

Is every US IP address residential?

No. An IP can be associated with the US and with a hosting network, residential access, a mobile network or another network type. Country and network type are separate properties.

Does a residential IP have to belong to me?

No. You might use the public IP of your own home connection or a service that routes traffic through a residential exit. Check the service’s connection method, sourcing explanation and terms.

Do I need a residential IP for every online task?

No. Start with the task and its requirements. If residential network characteristics are not relevant, that label may add little to your decision.
