Shared vs Dedicated IP: Which Do You Need?

1. Compare the allocation, not the marketing label

In this guide, we are comparing the public exit address that websites see when you use a VPN or similar connection. A ‘dedicated IP’ here does not mean a dedicated computer, private physical server or one-device limit.

For a concrete industry example, Proton’s dedicated-IP documentation distinguishes public servers shared by customers from addresses available only to one organization. Its organization-level model also shows why ‘dedicated’ need not mean ‘used by exactly one person.’

2. Match the choice to an actual task

• Everyday browsing: if you do not need an address reserved for you, evaluate the shared option on device support, reliability and the sites you actually use. Exclusivity alone adds no new task to your checklist.
• A work system with an IP allowlist: ask the administrator whether a stable, exclusive exit is required. Confirm the service meets that requirement before supplying an address.
• A team accessing business resources: establish who may use the exit and how access is removed when someone leaves. The relevant boundary may be the organization, not an individual employee.
• A US residential connection: start with country and network delivery. Decide about shared or dedicated allocation only if your task requires it.

An allowlist is a rule about the source address. Keep the system’s account and authentication requirements in place; buying an IP does not authorize access to someone else’s resources.

3. Keep dedicated, static and residential separate

Dedicated concerns exclusive allocation. Static concerns whether the address remains consistent. Residential concerns the network supplying the exit. Ask about each property independently, even when a plan bundles them together.

A useful counterexample comes from AWS Elastic IP documentation: AWS allocates a static public IPv4 to an account for cloud resources, and the customer can remap it between resources. Our conclusion from that example is simple: address persistence and account allocation do not establish residential delivery.

4. Assess access, privacy and performance separately

A shared exit can be affected by another customer’s behavior when a website makes decisions about that address. Exclusive allocation removes unrelated current customers from that particular source of uncertainty; it does not promise a clean history or universal acceptance.

There is also a privacy tradeoff. Proton notes that an address reserved for one organization is less blended with other customers’ traffic than its shared exits. That does not mean a website automatically learns your identity, or that sharing an IP makes you untraceable. Consider account logins and the rest of your browsing setup as well. Do not buy on a ‘no CAPTCHA’ promise. Cloudflare’s troubleshooting documentation lists browser settings, extensions, network problems and detection errors among challenge issues. Changing allocation cannot address all those causes.

Residential is not a promise of invisibility either. MaxMind documents a residential-proxy flag that combines residential-ISP association with suspected anonymizer use. Test the intended app separately. For speed, compare actual performance on your device; the shared/dedicated label supplies no bandwidth measurement.

5. Ask the provider five concrete questions

1. Is this exit shared with other customers, or reserved for my account or organization?
2. How long should the address remain the same, and what happens during maintenance, renewal or a location change?
3. Is the exit delivered through a residential network or datacenter infrastructure?
4. Which devices, apps and destinations use that exit, and how many simultaneous connections does the plan allow?
5. What does the trial cover, what happens afterward, and how do I cancel or get setup help?

Keep the answers alongside the plan name. If a requirement is essential, a vague ‘premium IP’ description is not enough. Ask for clarification before treating the feature as included. This applies equally to USip VPN and any other service.

6. Check the result without overclaiming it

Open What is my IP?, save the starting result, connect, then select Check again. VPN Observer reports the public IPv4 seen by its request and an estimated country when available.

The same address on two checks cannot prove that nobody else uses it, or that it will remain yours tomorrow. A different address confirms a change for that request. Neither result certifies dedicated or residential allocation, and selective routing can send another app through a different exit.
