Before you travel

Taking Sling TV to Canada?
Prepare your channels,
device and connection.

Before you cross the border, choose the live channel or recording you want to follow in Canada. Prepare the screen you will carry, check who else will use the account at home, and test your connection before departure.

Will your Sling TV package keep working across the Canadian border?

Canada is outside Sling TV’s official service area, even for a short visit. Sling requires viewers to be in the 50 United States or Puerto Rico to watch, subscribe or change an account. Complete app and account preparation while you are still at home, then prepare a Residential US IP connection option for your travel device. Sling International describes programming, not international roaming.

Five checks before departure

Your Sling TV travel checklist

Save a practical baseline: one live channel and, if you use DVR, one recording. Run the checks on the device you are taking to Canada so you can repeat the same test after arrival.

Prepare the device you will carry

Update the iPhone or iPad you will take and check that Sling supports it. For your Canada trip, keep a personal screen ready if the accommodation TV cannot run your app or connection setup.

Check supported devices →
Find your channel and recording

Install or update Sling and sign in on your travel device. Before crossing into Canada, find the exact channel and open the DVR area if you use recordings. Keep access to your account email in case you need to sign in again.

Changing your IP does not change your app-store country or install a missing app. Check app availability before departure.

Check your package and available streams

Check the channel against your current base plan and Extras. If someone will keep watching at home during your trip, agree which screens will be active: Sling Orange allows one stream, while Sling Blue allows up to three. Combined plans still restrict Orange channels to a single stream. DVR and on-demand viewing also use an available stream. Check Sling’s limits for your plan →

A Residential US IP provides the connection; your Sling subscription provides the channels and stream allowance. Confirm both before departure so a busy account is not mistaken for a Canadian location error.

Prepare your US connection

Use your USip profile and welcome-email instructions on this device. Check the connection with the IP tool, then test Sling TV playback separately.

A residential US IP is a connection option, not a playback guarantee. Service rules, your account and the chosen content still matter.

Test live TV and DVR before crossing

Start your chosen live channel on this device and let it play. Open a saved recording separately if that is how you plan to watch during the trip. For a scheduled game, note the channel, date and start time in your Canadian destination; check the event listing again near travel. A live broadcast, a replay and a DVR entry are different viewing tests.

Sling’s DVR is stored in the cloud, not as an offline video on your phone. Prepare a separate, legitimately available offline option for a flight or a stretch of the journey without internet. How Sling’s cloud DVR works →

Canada: plan the viewing, not just the border crossing

Keep your US viewing plan clear when the network changes.

A US phone plan that works in Canada does not extend Sling’s service territory. Nor does a familiar channel on a Canadian hotel TV establish access through your Sling account. Keep a short note of what you actually intend to watch and which device will play it.

  • National channel or local station? Note the channel name, not just the show. Some local stations depend on your eligible US location and plan. A station delivered through an antenna at home is not the same as a channel streamed by Sling on your phone.
  • Who is watching at home? Include the home TV when checking simultaneous use. Even a recorded program uses a stream. Agree on a viewing window before a game rather than trying to fix an account-limit message from the hotel.
  • Which Canadian city and viewing time? Save the event’s start time for the city you will stay in. If you will be on the road at that time, decide in advance whether you need a scheduled recording or a later replay, then verify that option in Sling.
After arrival

After crossing into Canada, repeat the same viewing test.

  1. Join the accommodation or mobile network and complete any Wi-Fi sign-in page. Confirm ordinary browsing works before opening Sling.
  2. Apply your prepared USip connection on the viewing device. If you use Smart DNS, recheck registration for the new network; repeat this when switching between hotel Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  3. Play the same live channel and saved recording you tested at home. If playback fails, note the exact message and whether someone else is using the account. Use the Canada diagnostic guide to choose the next check.

Leave with a prepared Sling TV setup.

Choose your Residential US IP plan, prepare your travel device and save the five checks before leaving for Canada. Repeat playback on the network you use after arrival.
