How to Watch US discovery+ Abroad: Check the Service Before the Connection

The discovery+ name now covers products with different operators, accounts and apps. If you are traveling with a US subscription, start there. If your old Canadian app stopped working, the 2026 service change requires a different set of checks.

Your next step from abroad

To try US discovery+ abroad, confirm your American subscription and its viewing app, check the current travel guidance, then configure the device you watch on. A Residential US IP is a connection option for the US product; it does not turn an old Canadian account into a current Rogers subscription.

Canada’s former Warner Bros. Discovery service closed on February 17, 2026. Its replacement has a separate website and app, so a failed old installation is not automatically a VPN problem.

Four checks before watching discovery+ abroad

  1. Identify the actual service. Read your latest receipt and check the app publisher. Distinguish US discovery+, Rogers’ Canadian service, another country’s service and a channel inside a provider’s app.
  2. Confirm the viewing account. Sign in through the platform you paid. A subscribe prompt should lead to account and activation checks, not an immediate second purchase.
  3. Prepare your US connection if needed. For the US product, set up Residential US IP using the instructions for your actual watching device. Reopen discovery+ after connecting. A laptop’s setup does not cover an independently connected TV.
  4. Test two episodes. Try your intended episode and another included program. Record whether failure occurs at login, at the play button or during playback; those results point to different fixes.

Read the US travel rule alongside the Canadian change

The US discovery+ travel article describes viewing in its listed North American destinations and says content and features can differ. For travel beyond that area, it directs viewers toward a separate local subscription where offered.

That article still uses shared US/Canada wording while also displaying the Canadian closure notice. Do not read it as proof that an old account works in the new Rogers app, or that the two services exchange subscriptions. Confirm the rule for your particular service and destination before paying for another account.

If you subscribed in Canada, follow the correct transition

The official transition notice directs former Canadian customers to the new Rogers service at discoveryplus.ca. Former direct subscriptions ended; follow the replacement service’s current subscription and app instructions.

The same notice treats other sellers separately: Prime Video Channels subscriptions were unaffected by the closure. TELUS and Koodo customers continue through their provider’s billing and use the Rogers viewing service. Check the seller before resubscribing. Changing to a US IP does not restore the discontinued Canadian app.

A location error in the current US app

If the account is American and the current US player rejects your location or connection, compare a Residential US IP route. Keep the episode and account fixed, connect the viewing device and try again. This supplies a different network exit; it does not create a subscription or guarantee acceptance.

Use the outside-US diagnostic for a country warning and the connection checks for a repeated rejection. A failed local connection abroad does not prove the account or app is broken.

Check the app version and the exact episode

US discovery+ has also updated its own app. Its app-update instructions distinguish devices that need a replacement installation from those that update normally. This US update and Canada’s operator change are separate issues.

If the app opens but an episode is missing, search its season within the platform you actually subscribe to. Use the content checks for missing programs and the player checks for a visible episode that will not start. If only the TV fails, compare the phone and TV setup.

Choose a connection for the US service you already use

For an active US discovery+ account needing a US route, review Residential US IP plans and device setup. After subscribing to the connection service, follow the supplied instructions and test the current player. Keep your streaming subscription and connection subscription separate when checking charges.
