before you leave.
Keep your Hulu.com account, app and viewing plans clear before Japan’s local Hulu service adds confusion. Prepare your travel device, US connection and an eligible offline backup before departure.
Will your subscription work in Japan?
Your Hulu.com subscription does not become a Hulu Japan subscription when you land. Hulu Japan operates at Hulu.jp, while Hulu.com access is intended for the US. Keep the app and account you already use, then check your connection and intended content. This checklist is for travelers with a Hulu.com subscription.
Your Hulu travel checklist
Choose your travel device. Complete each check on it, rather than relying on the TV that stays home.
Prepare your viewing device
Update the iPhone or iPad you will take, check Hulu’s device requirements and leave space for eligible downloads. Pack the headphones, charger and adapter you will use.

Open your existing Hulu app and find the series you watch through Hulu.com. Update and test it before leaving; a similar Hulu logo in Japan does not identify the same service.
Keep your working app installed. If asked to register again, check whether you opened Hulu.jp instead of Hulu.com before changing store settings or buying another subscription.
Sign in to your Hulu account
Sign in with your Hulu.com account. Verify access to its email address while away and confirm your plan stays active throughout the trip. Identify whether your intended program belongs to the streaming library, Live TV or an add-on; those access checks differ.
Your Hulu login and USip connection details are separate. This checklist does not ask for either.
Prepare your US connection
Set up USip on this device using the welcome-email instructions. Check the connection, then test Hulu separately: an IP result shows the network seen by the checker, not whether an episode plays.
Residential US IP routes supported traffic through US home broadband. Hulu’s location and proxy restrictions still apply, so check playback rather than relying on the IP label.
Play the video you want to watch
Play your intended episode or movie with your preferred audio and subtitles. If your plan supports downloads, prepare an eligible title before the flight. Check its expiry and Hulu’s download restrictions, and keep the device signed in.
Record the title and device you tried. A home test is a preparation milestone; repeat playback on your network in Japan.

Two Hulu services. Three viewing checks.
The useful distinction is your subscription, not the logo. A Hulu Japan offer is a local product; it does not transfer your Hulu.com account or watch history.
- Streaming library: note your exact series and episode. A title in one catalog does not establish the same version, subtitles or subscription access in another.
- Live TV: review Home-network rules before packing a streaming stick. Living-room devices must use Home for Live TV; mobile check-ins do not make Japan a supported international destination. Do not reset Home to a hotel.
- Flight: eligible Hulu Premium plans allow selected downloads on supported mobile devices, not computers or TVs. Downloads expire, and signing out deletes them. Prepare this backup before departure and review geographic restrictions.
Three checks when you arrive.
- Complete the hotel or apartment Wi-Fi sign-in and check ordinary browsing. Keep the working Hulu.com app; arriving in Japan is not a reason to replace it.
- Connect on your viewing device. For Smart DNS, recheck network registration and whether your accommodation allows the required settings.
- Try the same Hulu title. Note whether any error concerns sign-in, location, Home network or playback; those need different next checks.
