The quick answer
Check several pieces of evidence together. Copy your current public IP, inspect its network and hosting classification, then check VPN or proxy flags separately. Confirm unclear results with your connection provider. An ISP name, a US location or one green ‘residential’ label cannot establish how the connection is delivered.
1. Record the IP you are actually testing
Open What is my IP? in the browser and connection you want to check. Copy the public IPv4, record the time, and keep that connection active while looking it up elsewhere. Enter the copied address explicitly; a second site’s automatic ‘your IP’ result might be a different address.
VPN Observer shows public IPv4 and estimated country. It does not classify an IP as residential, detect every proxy, or test IPv6. 2. Read the network fields, not just the company name
Open IPinfo and enter your copied address in the ‘Search IPs, ASNs, or countries’ field. Record the ASN, organization, connection or network type, and any hosting flag the lookup supplies. In IPinfo’s field definitions, the ASN type describes the network organization; hosting and anonymous-network indicators are separate fields. Available detail depends on the lookup product.
- ISP or residential: useful evidence of an access-provider connection, requiring context.
- Hosting or datacenter: a reason to question a residential claim and request clarification.
- Business, mobile or unknown: keep the result in that category until you have better evidence.
An ISP can supply home and business customers. An ASN label cannot identify an individual subscriber’s service. IPinfo also explains that one ASN can contain both ISP and hosting ranges. Ask for the classification of the specific IP or range, not simply the reputation of a familiar provider. Our residential-versus-datacenter comparison explains the underlying distinction.
3. Check VPN and proxy detection separately
Residential describes a network characteristic. VPN or proxy detection describes how an address may be used. These can coexist: MaxMind defines a residential-proxy flag for a suspected anonymizing network associated with a residential ISP. A proxy warning therefore does not, by itself, prove a datacenter address.
Write down the exact flag and database name. ‘Hosting detected,’ ‘VPN detected’ and ‘residential proxy detected’ convey different findings. Do not translate all three into ‘fake residential.’ Equally, an absent or negative VPN flag is not a certificate that the address is an ordinary home connection.
If a free lookup provides only a country and ISP, leave proxy detection marked not checked. Missing information is not a passed test.
4. Compare another database and inspect registration
Look up the same copied IP in a second service that identifies its data source. Compare equivalent fields and keep screenshots with the date. Two websites using the same underlying database are not two independent confirmations.
Use ARIN Whois/RDAP to inspect the registered network range and responsible organization. ARIN explains that these records describe number resources and organizations with authority over them. Registration helps establish who manages a range; our interpretation is that it cannot certify the current physical setup of a VPN exit.
If results disagree, do not choose whichever label you prefer. Check whether the services classify the ASN or the individual range, and whether they expose a data date. MaxMind warns that database accuracy declines without updates. Send conflicting results to the relevant lookup provider and your connection provider for review.
5. Avoid location, DNS and CAPTCHA shortcuts
A US country result answers a location question. It does not establish network type. MaxMind says IP geolocation cannot identify a particular household. A map pin over a neighborhood is therefore not evidence that your exit sits in a home. For location disagreements, see why an IP can show the wrong country.
Reverse DNS is another clue to treat cautiously. A PTR record maps an IP to a domain name; words such as ‘dynamic’ or ‘broadband’ in that name are not a residential certificate. Your DNS resolver’s brand does not classify your public exit either.
CAPTCHAs and successful logins are not classification tests. Cloudflare lists browser settings, extensions and network problems among reasons challenges can fail. A residential connection can encounter a challenge, and a datacenter connection can load a page successfully.
6. Ask for the missing delivery details
If you are buying a residential connection, send the provider your dated findings privately and ask:
- Does this specific exit use a residential access network, a business ISP connection, or infrastructure hosted in a datacenter?
- Which websites and apps follow that route?
- Is this address shared, dedicated, static or rotating?
- How do they explain any conflicting hosting or proxy classification?
Keep your conclusion precise: ‘Two databases classify this IP as ISP-associated; the provider confirms a residential access connection’ is more useful than ‘100% residential.’ An unresolved conflict stays unresolved. Quick questions
Does an ISP name prove my IP is residential?
No. It identifies a network association. Check the specific range, hosting indicators and service delivery; a familiar ISP name alone does not distinguish a home connection from every business or hosted use.
Can a residential IP be flagged as a VPN or proxy?
Yes. A residential network association and suspected proxy use can coexist. Record both findings instead of treating the proxy flag as automatic proof of a datacenter address.
Can VPN Observer certify a residential IP?

Does a static or dedicated IP mean residential?
